In the previous chapter, we learned about Moses Levy. David was his son, who thought old Moses was crazy. When David learned of this, he became Mr. Yulee. Yulee practiced equal opportunity employment at his plantation -- all the Negro slaves got to work for their entire lives for free. See Yulee-owned Negro at left cutting cane.
David was born in 1810 on St. Thomas. He picked up some of the tricks of slave-owning and management from his co-religionists on the island. David quickly grew into manhood, and it was time to pick a profession. He opted for the law.
On completing his studies in St. Augustine, he jumped into politics. With a large personal fortune and all the right connections, he got a job helping to write the Constitution of Florida. If you're going to be sure of winning, you might as well make up the rules.
When Florida became a State, the new State needed a well-connected senator, so they naturally put Mr. Yulee in the job. In 1846, he picked up the name Yulee by act of the Florida State Legislature.
Some abolitionists were getting fed up with alleged poor treatment of the Jewish-owned slaves, and got a big war going in 1861. The States hosting Jewish plantations needed to hang on to the slaves, so they needed a name -- the Confederate States of America, and competent management. The Jews Judah Benjamin and David Yulee ran the
country, while the Southern Goys fought the Northern Goys. The Goys died in large numbers, but fear not: there was plenty of profitable business for the men running the war.
When the anti-Semite Sherman showed up, Mr Yulee experienced persecution, enduring a brief imprisonment at Fort Pulaski in 1865. Apparently the Union soldiers had something against Yulee's nose (see at right).
Fortunately for his business interests, the imprisonment was brief, and he was soon back in the railroad business. In his later years, he tired of the frontier atmosphere, and moved to New York so he could be among his own.
Mr. Yulee overseer's (at left) to encourage his slaves to work hard. Nothing too mean, since the little Negroes were allowed to play with their doggies while their mothers worked.
Once the cane was harvesting, Yulee's staff used modern equipment to get the juice out.
Then the slaves cooked the juice to get the sugar.
And then the Jew could sell plenty of sugar, helping his cousins in the dental business. He was an immigrant who came to a new country, where he amassed a huge fortune, and got his hands on all the levers of power. Just like in Russia, New York, and Denmark.
